Loading brushes in Illustrator

Loading Illustrator brushes, is pretty much the same for versions 8, 9 and Illustrator CS. First create a new document, then on the top menu select 'Window' and in the drop down menu select 'Brush Libraries'.

From there you can load any illustrator brush set.

If you are loading Illustrator brushes that you have downloaded or created, you need to select 'Other Library' and then browse to select the .ai file. When the illustrator .ai file is loaded it will appear in a new palate as seen below.

If you want the downloaded Illustrator set to appear every time you start the program, you need to put the chosen .ai file in the default brushes folder on you hard drive. Should be something like this for illustrator 8 on a PC.

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator 8.0\Brush Libraries

and for Illustrator CS

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator CS\Presets\Brushes

Once you have used a brush, the brush will then appear in the default brushes panel, when you save the Illustrator document the brushes used will also be save within the document, saving you having to reload a set if you need to alter or amend your illustrator artwork.
