Using Gradients in Adobe Illustrator

There are two main types of gradients in Adobe Illustrator, Linear and radial as seen below. Default versions of these can be found in the swatches panel.
radial gradients
To select the gradient type, highlight the object you want to apply the gradient fill to with the 'selection tool' selection tool then in the gradient panel select the desired fill from the dropdown menu as seen below.

You can also alter the colours used in a gradient fill by clicking on the small coloured tabs, then choosing a new colour from the colours panel by sliding the CYMK bars up and down.
choosing a colour
You can add several colours to a gradient, by simply clicking the blank area in between where the coloured squares are at the bottom of the gradient panel (fig1). To delete the colours click on them with the mouse and drag them out of the gradient panel.
Gradients can also be rotated to fit your design, select the object containing the gradient and then in the gradients panel enter a number in the 'angle' number box, as you can see above I have used 90.
